Please join us in congratulating Chef Sato on his big win in Korea.  The competition was grueling but Chef Grant gave it his all and bought home the win!  We are so proud of him!

Congratulations to our very own Chef Grant Sato on winning the 2015 Global Taste of Korea Hawaii Regional Contest.  Chef Grant is now in Korea for the Semi-finals and then on to the finals.  We wish Chef Grant all the very best of luck!

2015 Global Taste of Korea
Hawaii Regional Contest


The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Honolulu is receiving applications for the 2015 Global Taste of Korea Hawaii Regional Contest! The Global Taste of Korea is an international Korean culinary competition sponsored by the Korean government.

Each year, people who are passionate about Korean cuisine participate in regional contests around the world. The winners will be flown to Korea for the semi-final and final stages of the competition. This year Hawaii is one of 17 regional contests held worldwide. If you are a K-foodie, love cooking, want to win a free trip to Korea and go for the $10,000 grand prize—enter the competition!


Date: Monday, July 13, 2015

Location: Kapi’olani Community College (Ohia Building, Rm. 112)

Participant eligibility:

–      ANYONE who loves Korean cuisine and wants to test their culinary skills versus the world!

–      Participants must be U.S. citizens.

–      Because the primary purpose of this contest is to introduce Korean culture through Korean food to people who are not familiar with Korean culture, as well as to insure the equitability of this event, participants and their parents can never have held Korean citizenship and at least one parent should not be of Korean heritage.

–      Participants must be able to travel to Korea from August 20-28, 2015, for the semi-final and final contests. (Please note: if the winner of the preliminaries cannot participate in the International contest in Korea, that participant will be disqualified as a winner, and the second place contestant will be selected as the substitute.)

–      Participants must abide by all contest rules and requirements.

Contest Timeline:

–      11:30am-12:00pm: Opening

–      12:00pm-1:00pm: Contest “Japchae!”

–      1:00pm-2:30pm: Presentation and evaluation (each participant will have three minutes to present their dish to the judges)

–      2:30pm: Closing (participants dismissed until the dinner reception)

–      5:00pm-7:00pm: Award ceremony and dinner reception (All participants are invited to the reception, and may bring up to two guests.)


–      Hawaii Regional Awards: $500 (1st place), $300 (2nd place), $200 (1st place)

–      The winner of the regional contest will also receive a free trip to Korea to participate in the International competition!

–      Grand Prize: $10,000 cash

Contest Details:

–       Contestants will have one hour to create their own special japchae dish

–       A maximum of 12 contestants will be chosen

–       Standard kitchen equipment will be provided (saucepans, pans, bowls, etc.)

–       Contestants must provide all of their own personal tools (knives, etc.) and any specialized equipment

–       Contestants may bring one special ingredient or seasoning to enhance their dish

–       All contestants are responsible for set-up and final cleaning of their stations.

Judging Criteria

–       Contestants will be judged on the following criteria:

Presentation and creativity

Flavor and nutritional balance

Recipe and ingredient compatibility

Texture and doneness

Knowledge of Korean cuisine and demonstration of Korean cooking techniques

  • We have a good amount of culinary scholarships for the coming year.
  • You may start your online application now and submit it later.
  • Volunteer log sheet hours are required for CULN scholarships
  • Last year, many CULN majors received other non-CULN scholarships on the basis of their essays.


As graduation is around the corner, we wanted to remind your ACFEF Accredited Program graduates of the opportunity for them to apply for certification with the American Culinary Federation.  The process is so easy, but it’s not automatic.  They must apply within one year.  And if they join (or are already members), their certification is free! 

Application + Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree Transcript = Certified Culinarian or Certified Pastry Culinarian (depending on area of study)
Complete Application for ACFEF Accredited Associate Degree Program Graduates and send it in with final transcript that shows degree and graduation date.

Application + Certificate or Diploma Transcript + 1 year of work experience = Certified Culinarian or Certified Pastry Culinarian (depending on area of study)
Complete Application for ACFEF Accredited Certificate/Diploma Program Graduates and have your employer complete theEmployment Documentation Form and send both in with final transcript that shows certificate/diploma date.

Kapi`olani Culinary and King’s Hawaiians new collaboration will bring a new food venue to our campus.  The King’s Hawaiian Food Truck with be selling food on-campus Monday through Thursday in Lot A next to the Kopiko Building.  All dishes will feature King’s Hawaiian products and will be grab and go though some tables and benches will be placed around the area should you want to sit and enjoy being outdoors.
