The Dash of Aloha Book series are ideas for healthy living, and recipes for making tasty dishes based on the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan, using Hawaii grown farm fresh ingredients.
Kapi`olani Community College published the “A DASH of Aloha: Healthy Hawaii Cuisine and Lifestyle” book in 2007. The book became a local non-fiction best seller and won an award from the Hawaii Book Publishers Association (Ka Palapala Po‘okela Awards) in 2008. Ten thousand copies of the books have been distributed and used for health education, dietary counseling, healthy cooking training, and for the simple pleasure of cooking tasty and healthy foods with Hawaii ingredients. Funding for this book came from the USDA and a grant from the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (Farm Bill FY 2010).
The next installment, entitled “A SWEET Dash of Aloha: Guilt Free Hawaii Desserts and Snacks” is in bookstores now. Funding for this book came from the USDA and the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, with sponsorship from Whole Foods for the use of healthy ingredients in creating the recipes.
