Come to Bobby Sohns Demo on March 4

Our Ho’okipa Guest Chef Bobby Sohns will be having a public demonstration Monday March 4, 2013
from 12:15pm -2:00pm in Ohia 118 Auditorium. Bobby will be demonstrating and
providing tasting samples of 2 items. Please let your students know and please
encourage them to attend and support our Alumni Guest Chef!

Hawaii Culinary Competition Expo


We are excited to announce this year’s Hawaii Culinary Competition Expo which is made possible with the help of the Lyle L. Guslander Distinguished Visitors Program and Major Sponsors HFM Foodservice, Kyo-ya Co. and Starwoods Hotels. This year the expo will be held on December 7, 2012.  We look forward to participation from both students and professionals from around the state of Hawaii.  The Hawaii Culinary Competition Expo is an ACF Sanctioned Competition with ACF certified Judges.  We welcom Chef Russell Scott, CMC, WGMCChef Stanford DeCambra, CEC, CCE, CCA, AAC, and Chef Joseph Decker CMPC.

Culinary competitions play a vital role in culinary arts as they continually raise the standards of culinary excellence and put skills and knowledge to the test in a competitive format.

Kapi`olani Culinary Arts Program students have won several prestigious awards:

  • 2012 Silver Medal ACF Western Regional Student Competition
  • 2011 Gold Medal ACF Western Regional Student Competition
  • 2010 Silver Medal ACF Western Regional Student Competition
  • 2009 Gold Medal ACF Western REgional Student Competion and ACF National Title

KCC Culinary Arts has teamed with KFVE for a 13-episode cooking series called What’s Cooking Hawaii.  The series will feature Chef Grant Sato and KCC Culinary Students and alums.  Recipes will focus on healthier eating choices.  Tune in starting January 9th for the first episode.

3rd Annual Kahala Nui Healthy-licious Cooking Contest

The Third Annual Kahala Nui Healthy-licious Cooking Contest will be held on October 12, 2013.  Teams of two will Create a dish that can easily be replicated by the Seniors at Kahala Nui.  Have fun and do something good for your community.  Check out our guidelines and entry information here Kahala Nui 2013 Memo for Students (pdf)

Congratulations to Vaneza Agustin and Shianti Leighton who were the winners of the 2012 Kahala Nui Healthy-licious Cooking Competition. They were featured on KHON and KITV live morning news and What’s Cooking Hawaii with Chef Grant Sato and were each awarded a $500 scholarship.

Vaneza then went on to enter the contest for the James Beard Scholarship sponsored through the Kahala Resort and was chosen as the 1st place recipient to be awarded a $5,000 scholarship award.

Hawaii Food and Wine Festival


The Third Annual Hawaii Food & Wine Festival is scheduled for September 1-9, 2013.  Check out their site for  ticket and event information.

The 2013 Food and Wine Festival is just around the corner and want to sign you up as a student volunteer. The hours can be used for scholarship points, but most importantly the experience gained through this culinary display of world renowned local chefs and chefs abroad is priceless. The Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival is the premier epicurean destination event in the Pacific.  Set in the lush island paradise of O‘ahu, the four-day Festival features a roster of over 50 internationally-renowned master chefs, culinary personalities, and wine and spirit producers. Co-founded by two of Hawai‘i’s own James Beard Award-winning chefs, Roy Yamaguchi and Alan Wong, the Festival will showcase cooking demonstrations, grazing events and sit down service events, with dishes highlighting the state’s bounty of local produce, seafood, beef and poultry.

Set in the lush island paradise of O`ahu,
the 2nd Annual Hawai`i Food & Wine Festival was a huge success!

Co-chaired by two of Hawai`i’s own James Beard Award-winning chefs Roy Yamaguchi and Alan Wong, the three-day event featured a roster of internationally renowned master chefs, culinary personalities, and wine and spirit producers.  Sold out events showcased dishes using the State’s bounty of local produce, seafood, beef, and poultry. Ho`okipa is a fundraising event for students in the Kapi’olani Community College Culinary Arts and Hospitality & Tourism Programs. Students work in close association with their chef instructors to present and serve the finest culinary delights!

Ho`okipa 2013 will be held on March 8.
